Dr. Paul Hirano grew up in the South Bay where he attended 186th Street Elementary School, Peary Jr. High School and Gardena High School (when they were still the Mochicans! They have since changed the mascot to the "Panthers" to be politically correct.) He went on to excel at University of California Irvine where he was on the Dean's Honor list.
From University of California Irvine, he went to the Southern California College of Optometry. During optometry school he was the president of a student-run organization called Project Concern. This group of students and optometrists ran community vision screenings throughout Orange County. He won 2 scholarships, the George I. Deane Memorial Leadership Award and the Asian-American Optometric Society Scholarship. He was also honored by his peers who elected him Senior Class President.
Dr. Hirano served as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Southern California College of Optometry for many years and is a member of the:
American Optometric Association
California Optometric Association
Asian-American Optometric Society
South Bay Optometric Society
His research on tear composition and contact lens wear has been published in the Archives of Ophthalmology. He was appointed to the National Academy of Sports Vision and was on the staff of the International Olympic Games and has examined athletes from around the world.
Dr. Hirano met his wife, Wendy, while in optometry school. They were married 2 years after he graduated and now live in Torrance. Their 3 children are growing up as you can see from the pictures on the left. When they were younger he coached them all in baseball. Those coaching days are over, but Dr. Hirano still gets out to play softball on the weekends.
Dr. Hirano also is active in his church, Gardena Valley Baptist Church. This is the same church that he grew up in and returned to after his years of going to school in Orange County. For many years, he has been active on the church's Board of Deacons, serving as the head of the children's ministry, a member-at-large, and as the chairman of the board.
His philosophy in his practice is: "Unsurpassed Patient Care and Satisfaction". The practice's goal is to provide our patients with the best eye care they have ever received. From the first phone call, to the time when the patient walks out happily seeing their world clearly, our goal is excellence.
